Impact of a Population-based HPV Vaccination Program on Cervical Abnormalities: a Data Linkage Study

Evidence that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program is preventing cervical pre-cancer lesions in young women has been published for the first time as part of a collaborative study between the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Victorian Cytology Service (VCS). The findings, in an article written by Dorota M. Gertig et al and published in the medical journal BMC Medicine, are the first in the world to show that a population-based HPV vaccination program has resulted in a fall in cervical abnormalities within five years of implementation.
